Ever been wrapped up in a never-ending project?
After the Now Write! creative writing series, started by my aunt, Sherry Ellis, wrapped up, I became inspired to carry on her legacy with a similar book for actors, tentatively titled Now Act! – and I’ve been working on it (on and off) – for a decade! With a complex on-going project, it can be challenging to keep hold of the big picture.
This has been quite an education. Also a labor of love for me and my generous 80+ contributors. (If you are one of them and reading this, thanks again, from the bottom of my heart, for sharing your wit and wisdom, and for your patience.)There is still a way to go, but I can finally see “the light at the end of the tunnel.”
Knowing I’ll be able to exit a project tunnel I’ve been in for years, the “light” at the end of this long tunnel is giving me a glimpse of the book as a whole - and that’s exciting! This is the first acting book with a “many voices under one roof” approach to both craft and career. It will be useful for actors and teachers, and I think also for directors and writers – to understand actors better.
Screenwriters of San Diego Meetup
I rebooted the Screenwriters of San Diego Meetup and am offering a free monthly “Meet and Write.” The purpose is to help fellow writers get creative juices flowing, deepen knowledge of dramatic narrative storytelling principles, and be part of a creative community.
Not just for screenwriters, since much of what we explore applies to play and novel writing. Not just for San Diegans, since we're meeting on Zoom. We briefly share recent wins, accomplishments or milestones reached, talk about a screenwriting topic, and do a writing exercise.
In honor of Comic-con in San Diego next month, the topic for Wednesday, July 17 (6:30-7:30pm PDT) will be genre, with a fun surreal writing exercise from Now Write! Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror.
